Cava and wine In Catalonia, Penedes & Tarragona

The  Penedès region located between the mountains of Montserrat and Garraf are full of fascinating contrast. With the common denominator of the vine, wine and cava, each different location offers a new landscape, an exquisite dish, outstanding historical heritage.

Day 1. BARCELONA- SAINT SADURNI - IGUALADA

Pick up in Barcelona and transfer to the Saint Sadurni region. Arrival to one of the most recognized cava producers in Penedes. When the recognition of the word ‘Cava’ appeared as a denomination of origin, and was recognized as a quality item produced in a determined region, this family acquired an ancient paper mill dating from the 18th century, which had a great condition for the elaboration of Cava.
A familiar business on its third generation, created a company dedicated to the elaboration of high quality Cava since early 80’s with a very defined objective: to offer the best quality product with a superb service to their customers.

We initiate the visit with an explanation of the origins of the state, the cellar and the family. We also emphasize the landscape environment and the activities that are developed in the state. Next, tour the vineyard, the cellar located in the ancient building and the bottling area with the enologist and technical explanation of the process of fermentation and elaboration of cava.
During the visit  you will taste  the three  different varietals of the cava: Macabeo, Xarelo and Parellada. Finally, each one will be able to realize its own mixing .

We finish the visit with a taste of a base wine without the second fermentation, a 1 year old cava, a 2 years old cava, a 4 years old cava and finally an oxidized cava, to be able to compare the concepts explained within the visit. The visit will be guided by our enologist

Overnight in a quiet , warm and family managed hotel, built over an old paper mill which dates from 1750 and that has been restored and transformed into a small charming hotel with all the comfort of new technology. It is located in the centre of Catalonia, with direct connection with the A2 highway Barcelona-Lleida, at just 2 minutes from the centre of Igualada, 35 minutes from Barcelona, 45 minutes from Costa Daurada beaches and 90 minutes from Andorra...It is located in a natural and quiet environment where an efficient team of people will host you so that your stay becomes unforgettable.

Day 2. IGUALADA – ODENA – LA SELVA DEL CAMP

After  a  breakfast on such a relaxing environment, let’s take the road to enjoy another very special private winery  situated in the River Anoia valley. In this winery, the family have, for over four centuries, maintained the wine growing tradition . On over 60 hectares of level land at a reasonable altitude and watered by the River Anoia they grow the varieties of grape: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada and Chardonnay. By carrying out the wine making process on their own estate, they can offer you the fine cavas that they are renowned for. Also the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cariñena grow in estates belonging to them.

With over 600 years of history, it is one of the oldest country estates in Catalonia. Widely acknowledged for the elegance of its buildings, the Masia (Catalan country house) style family mansion is home to many pieces of antique furniture and porcelain. The chapel next to the house, built in 1922 and devoted to the Virgin Mercè, is decorated with frescoes by Josep Pey. From the same period are the modernist fountain and lake which enhance the estate's beauty.

After this experience, continue to SELVA DEL CAMP, where a Modernist country house of the famous architect Domenech I Montaner has been converted to a great hotel and awaits for you to enjoy.

This distinguished building has been catalogued as one of artistic interest and is considered the most emblematic of the municipality. The house was built  towards the end of the Modernist period and the beginning of nineteen hundreds by Joan Boqúe i Reverter, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Reus, who decided to commission the well known Architect Luis Doménech i Montaner  to demonstrate his new social standing.

In a nice and quiet atmosphere you will relax and rest before or after hydrotherapy baths,  massages or any of the treatments and programs chosen. Also, a 2 stars Michelin chef has been transferred from the Restaurant Girasol (Moraira, Alicante)  to the Hotel restaurant. You can’t miss this opportunity. By season menus as well as degustation gourmet menus are available.

Day 3. LA SELVA DEL CAMP –TARRAGONA

Breakfast at your hotel . We suggest a relaxing day at the Spa or to visit Tarragona since it is  the capital of the Spanish province of the same name and the capital of the Catalan Tarragonès region. Tarragona is one of Catalonia's most historical cities. In Roman times, this city, known as Tarraco, was the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis. In medieval times, the Metropolitan See of Tarragona was an important archbishopric of the Catalan-Aragonese court. In 2000, the city of Tarragona was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its wealth of archaeological remains dating back to Roman times. Great restaurants for an extraordinary culinary experience will be booked for you. Return to your hotel.
